This calculator helps you figure out what score you need on your final exam to achieve a specific final grade in your course.
Final Grade Calculator 🎓
Formula Used:
Final Exam Score Needed = (Desired Grade - (Current Grade × (1 - Final Exam Weight))) ÷ Final Exam Weight
Where:
- Desired Grade = the final grade you want in the course (as a percentage)
- Current Grade = your current grade before the final exam
- Final Exam Weight = how much the final counts toward your total grade (as a decimal, e.g., 20% = 0.20)
Example:
Let’s say:
- Your current grade is 85%
- The final exam is worth 30% of your total grade
- You want a final course grade of 90%
Step-by-step:
- Convert final exam weight to decimal:
30% → 0.30 - Plug into the formula:
Final Exam Score = (90 - (85 × (1 - 0.30))) ÷ 0.30
= (90 - (85 × 0.70)) ÷ 0.30
= (90 - 59.5) ÷ 0.30
= 30.5 ÷ 0.30
= 101.67
You’d need a 101.67% on the final exam to get a 90% final grade – so it might be time to aim for something a bit more realistic or talk to your teacher!
